Stories after Stroke
Our mission is to empower stroke survivors to articulate and publicly share their stories of wisdom, purpose, connection, and hope.
The Problem
Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability in the United States, and someone experiences a stroke every 40 seconds (CDC). The impact of stroke extends far beyond physical changes. Many survivors navigate shifts in identity, purpose, and belonging, along with feelings of isolation. Beyond Stillness addresses these often-overlooked aspects of life after stroke through intentional reflection, storytelling, and community engagement.
Our Approach
Beyond Stillness hosts personalized 7–12 week reflective storycrafting journeys for stroke survivors, accompanying them as they reframe and reclaim their stories through the lenses of wisdom, purpose, connection, and hope. They begin to shift from “what happened to me” toward “who I’m becoming now.” By sharing their stories, Storytellers offer support and inspiration to others navigating life after stroke. Our gatherings, retreats, and workshops further cultivate a community rooted in reflection, belonging, and hope.
“Not only are stories how we make meaning out of life events, they are how we connect with other people and form relationships.”
— Strong Story Lab
A Moment of Pause
for Storytelling and Reflection
Each storyteller meets weekly with Beyond Stillness via Zoom for about 7-12 weeks to reflect on their post-stroke journey and craft their story. Between sessions, storytellers are given reflective homework to further their story. In the final session, they record their story and an interview for publication on the Beyond Stillness: Stories After Stroke podcast.
Episodes are released on major podcast platforms (Apple Podcasts, Audible, Spotify, etc.) and reaches listeners in all 50 states and 100+ countries.
We’ve published 100+ unique survivor stories of wisdom, purpose, connection, and hope.
